Laundry

God will wash you clean, heart and soul.

There it is again.  It seems like I just washed that shirt and here it is, back in the laundry basket.  Funny thing about laundry, it never seems to go away.  Just when you’ve finished the pile, another one appears in its place.  You never catch up.  How do all those clothes get dirty so fast?

Imagine what your clothes would look like if you never washed them.  You lean against a dirty pole, brush your pants on the car door as you get in, put your sleeve down in a spot of spilled coffee.  Jelly squeezes out the back-side of a donut and lands in your lap.  Add to that the regular wear of a normal week.  Dirty, wrinkled, stained, you’d look a mess.  Regular washing restores your clothes to the condition they were meant to be in.

Sometimes I feel like laundry.  A stain here, a wrinkle there.  Ugly words fall out of my mouth and I feel their mark on my own heart.  Unkind actions and selfish motives stain my spirit.  Thinking ill of another person and I’ve got a dark blot in my mind.  Add to that the regular wear of daily life and I can feel like dirty laundry in my spirit.  I need to be washed.

Coming to Jesus like dirty laundry is exactly what he wants us to do.  He will make us clean and restore our soul to the condition it was meant to be in.  Jesus “loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.”  (Ephesians 5:25)  Just like laundry, I need to keep coming back to him.  Over and over throughout my life I throw myself back on the “laundry room floor” and say, “Jesus, forgive me and make me clean again.”  And he does.  “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify (cleanse) us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

Do you ever feel like laundry?  Back again with the same set of stains you had last time? It seems like you’ve just made a promise to stay clean and here you are again, in a pile of dirty clothes.  Jesus will pick you up with hands stained by his own blood.  And he’ll wash you – heart and soul, completely clean.  He doesn’t complain, doesn’t give up.  Never will He think, “This one is so worn it will never look clean again.”  He’ll wash you and restore you every time you come to him.

Scripture

“… your sins were washed away. You were made holy. You were made right with God. All of that was done in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

1 Corinthians 6:11

    1. yeah, imagine what it would be like if we went through life never being able to wash. Every smudge, every stain, every patch of dirt or spilled food still on you. It would be disgusting! That’s what my soul would look like if Jesus never washed it.
